In order to keep it: You have to give it away.

By Reggie Smith

Recently I have had the opportunity to spend a lot of time with family and friends I have known all my life. I have also had the opportunity to visit the places where I was born and raised in the south side of Jamaica Queens. While traveling to some of these reunions, I had to leave my wife, children, and grandchildren in Georgia.  Ultimately I am reconnecting with my roots as I spend time and effort to go care for my aging mother in New York. This time has provided me with a wonderful retrospectiveof my life. The emotions that have been evoked over this period of time have been overwhelming. I am extremely grateful for my own good health, and the loving and lasting friendships I now possess. When we measure the value of our livesloveand good health are our most valuable commodities, aren’t they?

I never imagined that the pain and suffering of active drug addiction would be transformed into a treasure beyond measure.  Being a recovering addict has provided me with the self-awareness, human connections and opportunities for sharing that has given my life meaning. The love and experiences we recovering addicts get to share inside and out of our fellowship is incomparable.  The spiritual principles we attempt to live by makes our lives and the world a better place. We constantly ask each other, and ourselves “how are you living?”

Material things are fun to have and usebut in the end they are all temporaryLoveis our greatest gift, and the paradox of lifeis that love is amplified when it is givenaway freely and without the expectation of it being returned.  Being loved is a wonderful feeling, but many of us have found that you can’t keep it unless you give it away.

Being a caretaker challenges us to be willing to love unconditionally.  Many of us are caring for parents, children, and grandchildren for more reasons than we can say.  As stressful as serving others can sometimes be, the love and satisfactionderived from sharing love is without parallel.  Let us do our best to raise the vibration on this planet by giving unconditional love and random acts of kindness in generous amounts. What this world needs now is love, sweet love.

We are here to love and heal the world and each other!!  After all, you are more than a follower; you are a WARrior!  It is time to RISE4WAR!!
